The city of Athens is making preparations for this weekend's Pelotonia event.

Pelotonia is a bike ride in support of cancer research that starts in Columbus and ends in Athens.

About 4800 riders participate and Athens Assistant Service-Safety Director Ron Lucas says about 600 of those riders will make the trip to Athens.

So, the city is closing Shafer Street between Richland Avenue and Hospital Drive to non-emergency traffic.

The closure will go from 8 a.m.on Saturday until 9 a.m. on Sunday.

Cars that need to get to O'Bleness Memorial Hospital from Richland Avenue will have to drive in the southern lane of Shafer Street.

"Please be patient will driving in this area on Saturday," said Lucas. "The city does not expect traffic to be backed up during this event."
