A resident of Shade has just announced his candidacy for Athens County Commissioner.

Mike O'Brien is a Democrat and a 17 year resident of Athens County.

O'Brien indicates he's running to "see the area prosper" and wants to work "with people to make things better."

The terms of current commissioners Republican Larry Payne and Democrat Mark Sullivan are set to expire at the end of 2012.

O'Brien says he's running for the seat now held by Mark Sullivan.

Sullivan is currently under investigation by the Ohio Attorney General's Office after his estranged-wife told authorities he was growing marijuana on his property.

A Board of Elections Spokeswoman says O'Brien has not formally filed petitions yet.

On the "Mike O'Brien for Athens County Commissioner" facebook page, O'Brien says he pledges to be a full-time commissioner.

He graduated from Ohio University with a degree in communications.

O'Brien currently works in Athens as a copy writer.
