The Albany woman accused of leaving her 3-year-old son at the scene of a crime was sentenced to nearly two years in prison today.

Cassandra Smith appeared in Athens County Common Pleas court today to answer to charges of possession of heroin, theft and receiving stolen property. Athens County Prosecutor Keller Blackburn says the theft charge was dismissed and she pleaded guilty to the remaining charges, in addition to one misdemeanor charge of endangering children.

Smith was found with heroin in early June.  Officers said she and two men tried to take $5,000 worth of machinery and steel from a farm by loading it on a pickup truck.

Athens County Sheriff Pat Kelly said the three had taken the truck on a test drive from a local dealership and never returned it.  Kelly said Smith left her toddler in a car seat when she fled on foot.

Smith was sentenced to 23 months in prison.
