A college town might seem like an unlikely place to begin a ministry, but a new church has taken up residence in Athens.

Founder Aaron Kuhnert, students from Carbondale, Ill., and members of Vine Community Church, brought Brookfield Church to Athens in June 2011.

The church’s founders are confident in their choice of location. According to Brookfield’s website,  “Athens felt the most like home,” in comparison to other places they considered.  Leaders of the church declined to be interviewed for the story.

Recently, the Princeton Review ranked Ohio University as the number one party school in America. While Athens maintains a wild reputation, students who attended the church service agreed that Brookfield Church has a purpose on campus. "They came to one of the craziest places to start a church," observed Matt LoPresti.

Brookfield Church offers a service at 10:30 a.m. every Sunday at the Athena Cinema, located at 5 North Court Street. During the service, kids programs are available. Also, several of the church leaders provide small group sessions on Wednesday and Thursday evenings. Students as well as members of the community are welcome to attend.
