The first book detailing the complete history of Hocking County is now available for purchase.

Local historian Judy Maniskas wrote "Logan and Hocking County" as part of the Image of America Series.

Maniskas says this is an area with a story that needed to be told. "Fifty years ago, there was a small book written, but no as complete as this one.  So there is a lot to be said about our small county," she said.  Maniskas says the book details all 12 townships in the county and has pictures of local state parks.

The book also reveals history about the area that were unknown before, such as the story of Jolly Nelly. "She was a gal from Ward Township and she decided that when she was 18, she was going to go into the circus, which she did.  She became, also, a silent movie star," Maniskas said.

Maniskas says she felt this was the right moment to release a book like this. Copies of the book are available at the Athens County Historical Society and Museum.
