Ohio's new election law that shortens the state's early voting period has been placed on temporary hold after opponents submitted more than 300,000 signatures in their effort to get a repeal question on 2012 ballots.

By submitting their petitions Thursday, the opponents have halted the elections law from taking effect on Friday. That means local election officials now have to operate under the old law, and early voting in the state will start on Tuesday.

State elections officials must verify the signatures to see if they meet the requirements to get a referendum before voters next year. That's the earliest chance Ohioans would have to decide whether the elections overhaul should be tossed out.

Opponents need roughly 231,000 valid signatures to get a referendum, and plan to continue circulating petitions.
