The “Clash of the Titans” matchup between quarterbacks Jaylen Prater and Trey Bennett looked like an exciting game where each player would lead his team up and down the field.

The beginning of tonight’s matchup between the Wellston Golden Rockets and Alexander Spartans wasn’t quite what you would anticipate, as the Golden Rockets upset the Spartans 27-14.

Wellston’s first possession ended with 16 yard touchdown run by running back Michael Downer to take a 7-0 lead.

Alexander immediately responded on the kickoff when Trey Bennett returned the ball into Wellston territory, including an ankle-breaking juke on Wellston’s kicker.  Running back Benton Milum capped that drive off with a 15 yard touchdown run to tie the game at 7.

It was here that Wellston’s defense began to make its stand with two key stops on fourth down in the first half to keep Alexander’s potent offense to just seven points.

Meanwhile, Prater began to take over and completed two deep passes to wide receiver Austin Craig, one for a 56 yard touchdown. The other was a fourth down conversion and led to a one yard touchdown run by Prater.

Alexander had no intention of throwing in the towel and an early third quarter touchdown run by Bennett was proof.  However, Wellston’s defense came through when necessary to help fuel a victory for the Golden Rockets. Prater added another one yard touchdown run in the quarter to seal the win for the Golden Rockets.
