As Ohio University students travel home to enjoy their six-week holiday, many local shops are left with open positions.

Many places in Athens are accepting applications for this year’s winter intercession.

– UPS: United Parcel Service hires many students during the holiday season, one of the busiest times for the company. Most of the positions are delivery, which includes physical labor, but the payoff is higher than minimum wage, starting around $12.

– Brenen's: This café provides customers a spot to enjoy a sandwich and a hot cup of coffee. Brenen's is looking for students who have experience in a café environment, but it is not a requirement.

– Hungry Howie’s: This pizza chain is looking for applicants to fill management, in-store and delivery positions.

– GlenLaurel Inn: A Scottish inn in Hocking Hills is on the hunt for a new server. The server will work mainly with breakfast and dinner.

When submitting applications, a good resumé and cover letter can make a positive first impression. However, there are other aspects of the job hunt to consider.

“Customer service skills come in handy and I always ask if they have previous retail experience. I think that helps a little bit but we are willing to train too,” said Jessica Kopelwitz, owner of Fluff Bakery.
