Ohio's top judge is disappointed that the state's voters said no to raising the age limit for serving on the bench.

An issue defeated Tuesday would have allowed people as old as 75 to become a judge in Ohio. The vote keeps the maximum age at 70.

Chief Justice Maureen O'Connor said in a statement Wednesday that the change would have been a step in the right direction for age equality in Ohio.

She had endorsed the issue and appeared in ads supporting a yes vote.

O'Connor now says she hopes for more progress against what she describes as arbitrary age limits on public service.

The chief justice says all that matters is a person's ability to serve.

Opponents of the measure included an association of county prosecutors.
