A longtime Ohio lawmaker is leaving the state House of Representatives at the end of the year to take a lobbying job with Shawnee State University.

Wellston Republican Rep. John Carey was named today as assistant to the president for Government Relations and Strategic Initiatives at the university in Portsmouth.

His job will involve representing the university's interests before the board of regents in Columbus and county officials in Scioto County.

The 17-year veteran of Ohio's Statehouse says it wasn't an easy decision, but he felt it was time to move on and to give someone else the chance to offer new perspective.

Carey is one of three lawmakers who have announced that they will be leaving by the end of the year.
