The word "interim" has been removed from Joseph Shields title.
Shields has been named vice president for research and creative activity and dean of the graduate college at Ohio University.
A news release from the university says Shields, who was serving in the position in an interim role, was selected for the permanent position after a national search.
"Joe believes wholeheartedly in the capacity of Ohio University faculty, students and staff to make major contributions to the development of knowledge in all realms," Vice President and Provost Pam Benoit said. "He is passionate about the vital connection between research and creative activity and teaching."
Shields is a professor in the Department of Physics and Astronomy.
He joined Ohio University in 1996.
"I am excited by the prospect of working with our talented faculty, students and staff to further the university's mission in the advancement of knowledge and culture," Shields said.
The search for Shields' position was one of three dean searches going on at Ohio University fall quarter.
Commonwealth Medical College Associate Dean for Research and Economic Development Daniel Flynn, University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Vice Chancellor of Research and Economic Development Colin Scanes and University of Toledo Vice President of Government Relations and Geography Frank Calzonetti were also considered for the position.
