Parkersburg's finance director has resigned following his arrest on a drunken driving charge.

Doug Life submitted his resignation Wednesday morning.

Life's resignation letter says he doesn't want media controversy surrounding his position to endanger Parkersburg's financial progress.

Mayor Bob Newell appointed assistant finance director Angie Smith to replace Life.

Parkersburg police charged the 54-year-old Life with aggravated driving under the influence after his pickup truck ran off State Route 95 and hit street signs and a concrete barrier Sunday evening.

Life remains free on $1,000 bond.

Life was named finance director in 2009 following the firing of Randy Craig.

Craig pleaded guilty in 2010 to embezzling money from the city.
