A retired Vinton County judge will fill the 87th Ohio House District seat left vacant by former Representative John Carey.

Ohio House Speaker William Batchelder confirmed today Philip Rose, of McArthur, agreed to take on the position in the interim until a new representative is elected.

Rose will act as representative until the winner of the March 6 primary is certified. He served as judge for Vinton County Probate and Juvenile courts.

Carey resigned at the beginning of the month to take a job at Shawnee State University.

Batchelder says Rose will be sworn in on Tuesday. The 87th district covers Jackson, Vinton and Gallia counties, as well as parts of Lawrence and Ross.
