Former Ohio University Swimming and Diving coach Oscar “Tommy” Thomas Jr. passed away, at age 85, last Sunday (Jan. 22).

Thomas coached men’s swimming and diving at Ohio University from 1950-1954, and led the Bobcats to the 1953 and 1954 MAC team titles.

Current women’s swimming and diving coach Greg Werner had the opportunity to meet Thomas three different times during his tenure at Ohio. Werner said Thomas was “always someone that was very pleasant and very involved, aware and enthusiastic… He coached the same way.”

Werner added that Thomas always kept up with the current Bobcat swimmers, and always wanted to meet them when the team traveled to Columbus, where Thomas lived.
