An Athens hospital now offers a pain management clinic, but it is one that does not focus on prescriptions.

O'Bleness Health System President John Yanes says physicians and staff will provide advanced care for pain disorders, without the reliance on addicting pain medication.

Yanes says a clinic for pain management is necessary for the area.

"There are many patients, many residents in our community that have legitimate pain. This brings a highly trained physician who is maybe physical medicine trained or anesthesiologist with additional training that actually uses different types of procedures to specifically treat that pain," said Yanes.

Yanes says before, patients had to leave the county for this type treatment.

He says in a region battling a prescription drug abuse epidemic, people should know the new clinic is not a pill mill.

"We see patients that are dependent on prescription drug medication present themselves in the emergency department. So, certainly we want to be a good community partner; so we do our part to address that. The pain management program allows a legitimate program to be able to treat those patients," said Yanes.

The pain management clinic is located on the second floor of O'Bleness Memorial Hospital.
