The Alexander Spartans kick off the Division III playoffs this Tuesday when they take on Meigs at 8 p.m. at Athens high school.

The last time the two met, the Marauders slipped away with a three-point win over the Spartans, winning 61-58 giving Meigs their only win this season.

The teams’ records have not improved much since their last matchup, with Alexander on an eight-game losing streak while Meigs has lost their last six. Alexander (4-16), (2-8) finished in fifth place in the TVC-Ohio while Meigs (1-18), (1-9) finished behind them in last.

The Spartans drew a favorable seventh seed for the playoffs, which helps them as they play for their fourth consecutive sectional title.  Meigs will have a tougher schedule as the tenth seed if they make it past Alexander. The winner of this matchup will play Wellston on Saturday at 3 p.m. at Athens high school.

Both Meigs and Alexander lost both of their games against Wellston earlier in the season, but some were closer than others.

The Spartans lost to the Rockets in a hard-fought game in early December 54-52 and fell just short once again in late January 55-50.

On the other end, Meigs improved immensely from their first and last games against Wellston.  When the two teams met in the beginning of January, the Marauders walked off the court with heads hung from a score of 69-37. After their second matchup, which occurred just over a week ago, Meigs only lost by four points, 77-73.

While both Alexander and Meigs have improved their play throughout the regular season, the playoffs offer a clean slate where everyone is 0-0. Tuesday will be a battle but it will come down to whoever executes the best under pressure. The winner plays Wellston on Saturday.
