Athens County voters decided a trio of contested primary races today.

In the tense race for Athens County engineer, Democrats Jeff Maiden and Archie Stanley faced off.  Stanley has held the job for the last 32 years.  In a candidates forum, Maiden said the county's roads are in poor shape. Stanley alleged Maiden engaged in poor business practices.

There is no Republican candidate for Athens County engineer on the ballot as of now.

Two primaries for Athens County commissioners pitted Democrats Charlie Adkins against Gary Edwards, while the field in the second race was considerably deeper.

Paul Barrett, Robert Baughman, Chris Chmeil, Mike O'Brien and Mark Sullivan all vied for the Democratic nomination for the seat Sullivan currently holds.

The winner of the Adkins-Edwards contest will face incumbent Larry Payne in the fall.
