Since 1977 listeners have gathered on Sunday mornings to listen to Keith Newman host the show “Below the Salt.”

It started when WOUB's AM programming director needed someone to fill in a shift early Sunday morning, a notoriously difficult time to get radio announcers – especially Ohio University students – to volunteer for. She found the perfect person in Keith, a lifelong radio fan who had an extensive and eclectic personal music collection.

The rest, as they say, is history. Filling a void on the generally uninteresting Sunday morning radio dial, Keith's show quickly gained a following. It wasn't long before WOUB asked Keith to move to the much more powerful FM station, where he began broadcasting to listeners throughout southeastern Ohio and neighboring areas of West Virginia.

On March 18, 2012 – 35 years after the show began – the last show aired.

The new Sunday schedule is:

6 a.m.  eTown

7 a.m.  Fresh Air Weekend

8 a.m.  Weekend Edition

10 a.m. Thistle & Shamrock

11 a.m. Prairie Home Companion

1 p.m.  D28

WOUB Public Media is especially thankful to Keith Newman for volunteering his time and the sacrifices he has made to produce “Below the Salt” for 35 years.
