An Ohio gay rights group says it will not support a ballot initiative that would overturn the state's ban on same-sex marriage.

Equality Ohio Executive Director Ed Mullen says that broader community support needs to be secured before the issue can proceed.

The Ohio Freedom to Marry coalition proposed the amendment.

Mullen encourages the group to talk with other states that have dealt with this issue first.

This came just as Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine received word Friday he had three weeks to respond to a lawsuit from the Ohio Campaign to Protect Marriage.

The group filed suit after DeWine approved a ballot amendment on gay marriage.

The potential measure would overturn the statewide ban on same-sex marriage.

It would also permit religious organizations to refuse to perform and recognize those marriages.

The lawsuit wants to keep the issue off the ballot.
