An owner of three medical clinics and six doctors who worked for him have been charged with illegal drug distribution related to the alleged improper dispensing of prescription painkillers.

An indictment alleges that dozens of customers a week would travel hundreds of miles to visit the clinics in southern and central Ohio and pay $200 per visit for painkillers.

The indictment announced by federal prosecutors on Thursday alleges 47-year-old Tracy Bias of West Portsmouth oversaw six doctors who wrote illegal prescriptions and also opened unlicensed dispensaries after legitimate pharmacists refused to fill prescriptions.

The indictment says prescriptions were written without meaningful physical exams and resulted in the death of at least two patients.

A message was left with the attorney recommended by the federal public defender to represent Bias.
