A federal jury says a former Wood County sheriff's deputy didn't violate a suspect's civil rights during a 2009 arrest.

The verdict came this week in a lawsuit filed by Brian Sawyer against former Deputy Jim Asbury.

Sawyer was arrested in October 2009 on domestic assault, public intoxication and other charges. His lawsuit claimed Asbury choked him and slammed him into a wall at his house.

Asbury resigned from the sheriff's department in June 2010.

Sheriff Jeff Sandy says that the verdict reflects the Wood County grand jury's decision to not charge Asbury in the incident.
