Athens law enforcement officers arrested nearly 30 people during the street party known as Palmerfest this weekend.

According to Athens Police Captain Ralph Harvey, officers made 28 arrests for offenses ranging from disorderly conduct and public intoxication, to underage consumption and possession of marijuana.

Harvey says some of the arrests were for multiple charges.

The Ohio Investigative Unit, the agency tasked with patrolling liquor law violations, arrested 30 people Friday, resulting in 35 charges and made 50 arrests Saturday, resulting in 65 charges.

Police shut down the annual street party shortly before 8:30 p.m. after a house at 11 Palmer Street caught fire.

Party-goers threw bottles at firefighters attempting to put out the blaze.

Mayor Paul Wiehl declared the area a riot zone, which allowed authorities to shut down the party and clear the area.

The house fire is considered suspicious.
