It was close, but Mayor of Parkersburg Bob Newell will be a candidate for re-election in the November election.

Newell defeated Democratic challenger Gerald Board by 99 votes in the primary.

Board, who was appointed by Newell as police chief when he took office in 2006, and served until 2009, challenged Newell in the Democratic race.

Newell faced voter anger over a $2.50 user fee approved last year by city council, and, in recent days, was named in a suit over longevity pay.

The mayor will face Republican and current city council member Sharyn Tallman in the fall.

Tallman, who was unopposed for the Republican nomination, is a three-term member of council who has opposed Newell on several issues, including the user fee.
