If you ask Republican Shane Thompson what his focus is in the race for the Ohio 30th Senate District, he'll answer: "Job creation and economic growth for Ohio's Appalachian region."

Thompson, officially announced his state senate campaign Wednesday.

"It's gonna come down to leadership as being the game changing element.  Having worked in the private sector, I think I've got good perspective on what it takes to create an atmosphere for business to flourish," said Thompson.

Thompson is 42 years old, a resident of St. Clairsville and a vice president at Kinsbursky Brothers, a battery recycling company.

He was nominated by party leaders to fill the ballot spot left open by Laura Groux, who dropped out of the race.

Thompson says he's not worried about becoming a candidate a little late in the game.

"There's enough time to get the message out.  I'm gonna work hard to make sure that I let the people of eastern Ohio know that they have an alternative and let them hear what I have to say," said Thompson. "Hopefully they'll agree that I've got some good ideas."

The Democratic candidate in the 30th District is State Senator Lou Gentile.
