A Putnam County company has received preliminary approval on a loan to turn a building owned by Dow Chemical into a data services center.

Alpha Technologies Inc. of Hurricane plans to use a $2.7 million loan to buy the building located at the West Virginia Regional Technology Park in South Charleston.

The West Virginia Economic Development Authority gave preliminary approval to the loan Thursday.

Alpha owner Doug Tate says he wants to use the building as a backup storage and disaster recovery facility for technology companies.
