A historic building in downtown Lancaster has been awarded a tax credit of $71,000 for rehabilitation.

The Bodenheimer-Mayer house on North Columbus Street is the first project in Lancaster to receive the award.

Dating back to 1835, the two-story building was vacant for the past four years.

Once the building is rehabilitated, the first floor will be a retail storefront with two apartments above.

The Ohio Department of Development awarded the money as part of the Ohio Historic Preservation Tax Credit program.

The program was renewed last year by Governor John Kasich and allocates $60 million annually.
