The Decorative Arts Center’s 2012 summer exhibition, Appalachian Strings: The Instruments, Their Makers, The Music, is opening Saturday, June 23 and continuing through Sunday, Sept. 9.
Curated by Thomas Queen, the exhibition will present an extensive collection of dulcimers, banjos, fiddles, guitars and mandolins, gathered from private and public collections across the United States.
Throughout the exhibition, museum art classes will tour the installation. Other planned outreach activities include a collaborative musical performance with the Lancaster Festival, a Bluegrass concert and an open stage over Labor Day weekend, featuring “make-do” instruments.
Support for the exhibition comes from the PNC Arts Alive program, a three-year, $1.5 million initiative that supports visual and performing arts groups with the goal of increasing arts access and engagement in new and innovative ways.
