Lawrence-Benedict explains that Title IX is a fairly misunderstood law; it does not just relate to women's equal rights to participate in athletics, as many think.
Lawrence-Benedict says, "[Title IX] is really a law related to educational opportunities. So not just athletics, but originally this was to help alleviate discrimination related to science programs, technology programs, even entry to medical and law schools for women".
However, Title IX has played a pivotal role in achieving equal athletic opportunities for women within schools and colleges; Lawrence-Benedict discusses the changes in female athletics over four decades.
