A 98-year-old southeast Ohio man who quit high school to work on a farm and help his family during the Great Depression has received an honorary diploma more than 80 years later.

Chester Lackey's nephew knew his uncle had always wished for the diploma and wrote to the Logan-Hocking School Board about the New Straitsville man.

The district agreed to give the former sailor and oil field worker an honorary diploma.

Nephew Chris Stiverson says Lackey had a mixed response.

Stiverson says his uncle's first reaction to the news of the board's decision was that he wasn't sure the diploma would get him much these days.

But Stiverson says Lackey cried when he received the long-awaited document.
