Five people were injured in a rear-end collision Monday afternoon after the driver of one vehicles says he fell asleep at the wheel.

Troopers with the Ohio State Highway Patrol say Robert Basel, 54, of Galloway, drove his Chevrolet box truck into the rear end of 48-year-old Cheryl Stai's Jeep Cherokee as she was waiting to turn onto Clear Creek Road off US 33.

Stai's SUV was forced off the side of the road and rolled, coming to a rest on its side.

All five occupants of the vehicle were injured.

Stai and two juveniles were taken to Fairfield Medical Center.

Two others, John Stai, 42, and Charles Smyers, 71, were eventually air-lifted to Grant Medical Center in Columbus.

No word on their conditions.

Basel was charged with failure to maintain assured clear distance ahead and operating a vehicle with impaired alertness.
