Students in the Athens City School District start a new school year Monday.
And The Plains Elementary starts a new era.
A bigger bunch of students will fill the building.
Chauncey Elementary is now closed and those students will be attending The Plains, where Heather Skinner is the principal.
"As soon as they hit the door we're going to start," she says. "We want to get it to be a cohesive group of The Plains Elementary and not divided up into two different parts any more."
The effort to bring everyone together begins this afternoon with a picnic.
Principal Skinner says the number of students at The Plains will increase from 365 last year to about 430 this year.
With a larger student body, transportation becomes more of an issue.
In fact, says Skinner, the number of school busses will almost double.
Despite the changes, Skinner expects a smooth start on Monday.
Chauncey Elementary was closed to save money.
