A 68-year-old Athens woman apparently knows how to protect herself.

Athens County Sheriff Pat Kelly says Tamara Snyder went outside Wednesday night to see why her dogs were barking.

As she walked around her van she says a man in a black ski mask knocked her to the ground and began kicking her.

Snyder told the sheriff she pulled a .22 caliber derringer from her pocket and fired at her attacker as he ran up the driveway.

Snyder said the man did not speak to her and she only remembers his being about 6 feet tall and wearing the mask.
