The Washington County Salvation Army expects more Christmas Assistance applications this year.

Major Karen Garrett says the number of applicants almost always increases every year.

But, Garrett says she is certain that the numbers will increase even more this year because of the slow moving economy.

"I've only been here three months, but I've seen already that people are getting laid off and they are struggling," says Garrett.

The application process starts next Tuesday and ends Decembers seventh.

Garrett says the program starts early because the volunteers need time to gather gifts for the families by Christmas time.

"There are about 175 families that we serve and it takes that much time to sort and pack and get things done," says Garrett.

Those who realize they will need the assistance after the December seventh deadline will be put on a waiting list.

Anyone with questions regarding the assistance program or their eligibility is urged to call their local Salvation Army.
