A 70-year-old man is in jail following an alleged altercation with an Athens County sheriff's deputy on Wednesday.

Sheriff Pat Kelly says an off duty reserve deputy noticed Danny Thompson staggering to his car with keys in hand at a service station in The Plains.

Kelly says the officer could smell alcohol and tried to stop Thompson from driving home.

The deputy says he asked if there was anyone who could give him a ride home.

The deputy says Thompson told him that he was driving home and that he couldn't stop him.

Thompson then allegedly punched the officer repeatedly.

Two additional deputies arrived to help detain Thompson, who continued fighting.

Thompson is charged with assault on a police officer, resisting arrest, and disorderly conduct by intoxication.

He is now in the Southeast Ohio Regional Jail.
