The new executive director of the Southeastern Ohio chapter of the American Red Cross is already looking ahead to new opportunities to keep the region safe.

Jane Patton served as the interim director last spring and officially took over the position this fall.

Patton says she wants to ensure there is equal representation in Athens, Gallia, Meigs and Vinton counties, the four counties the branch serves.

There are four main services that the Red Cross offers: health and safety courses, blood services, aid to military families and disaster services.

Patton says getting new volunteers trained for disaster is important.

"Whenever we have a disaster, like the power outage, is when we realize there are a lot of people interested in serving but they're not trained and each disaster person does have a lot of training," said Patton.

A training session will be held October 27 and 28 at the Ohio University Inn.

Patton says anyone interested needs to register before the session.
