West Virginia regulators have approved a nearly $6.3 million rate increase for Mountaineer Gas.
The 2.54 percent increase approved by the Public Service Commission was a little more than half the 4.9 percent requested by the company.
The PSC said Wednesday that despite the increase in the base rate, the average customer will pay about $5.24 less per month. That's because the commission recently slashed Mountaineer's rate for recovering its purchased gas costs.
Mountaineer Gas serves about 218,000 customers in 49 West Virginia counties.
