A recent study says West Virginia is an attractive place for retirees and more could be done to entice them to live in the state.

Expanding efforts to attract retirees is among the top strategies recommended by the West Virginia Ten Year Tourism Plan. Arlington, Va.-based AECOM Technical Services Inc. conducted the study for the state Division of Tourism.

According to the study, West Virginia offers proximity to family and friends and an affordable cost of living. These are key factors that retirees consider in choosing a retirement location.

The study also says West Virginia can capitalize on the trend of travelers taking more trips that are shorter.

Tourism Commissioner Betty Carver said every county has tourism potential.
