An Ohio University custodian is charged with criminal damaging in connection with a fire on the roof of the Research and Technology building late last month.

According to OU Police, Jason Brown, 32, of Chauncey, told investigators he had discarded a cigarette after smoking on the roof.

The cigarette is believed to have caused the fire, which resulted in more than $20,000 in damages, although a final total has not yet been given.

The fire happened around midnight on Friday, November 30.

The building was evacuated and the Athens Fire Department responded to the call.

No one was hurt.
