Ohio schools would receive their own A through F grades under a bill creating a new state performance ranking system that is now headed to the governor.

A spokesman for Gov. John Kasich said he'll sign the bill, which cleared the Legislature Thursday.

The legislation calls for developing a letter-grade scale for school districts, school buildings, community schools, STEM schools and college-preparatory boarding schools based on more than a dozen performance measures. The House agreed to Senate changes in a 56 to 31 vote Thursday.

Letter grades would be phased in to replace the five-tier system of excellent, effective, continuous improvement, academic watch and academic emergency. No overall grades for districts would be given this coming year.

Community schools serving mostly academically challenged students would see a different scale developed.
