The State Highway Patrol says six people died on Ohio roads during the New Year's holiday period.

The fatal crashes on Monday and Tuesday occurred in Franklin, Lucas, Meigs and Stark counties.

A year ago, 14 people were killed during the New Year's holiday reporting period, which spanned four days instead of two and included a weekend.

The total number of people killed on the state's roads increased in 2012 compared with the previous year's record low. There were at least 1,056 deaths in 962 fatal crashes during the past year. That's up from 1,015 deaths in 2011.

Ohio also has at least 45 unconfirmed crash fatalities for 2012. They include those that remain under investigation and may not ultimately be ruled traffic deaths.
