The Ohio University wrestling team fell to No. 18 Kent State Friday in Kent, Ohio, 26-11. This put an end to the momentum the Bobcats had gathered this week after earning a big win over Northern Illinois and receiving national recognition in the InterMat Wrestling Poll.

Ohio started off strong with an 8-2 win for Cody Walters (174 lbs.) over Sam Wheeler. The Bobcats were unable to maintain the lead, losing the next two matches.

Ohio neared a come back with a technical fall for Kagan Squire (141) that drew the score to 17-11 with three matches remaining. The following match Kent State’s Nick Carr (149) barely escaped Andrew Romanchik, 8-7, and the Bobcats slid to a halt, losing the final three matches.

The Green and White was ranked 28th by InterMatWrestle.com earlier this week. Walters and heavyweight Jeremy Johnson also received individual rankings in the top 20. Both produced wins for Bobcats at Kent.

The loss draws the Bobcats’ record to 4-4 and 2-2 in the MAC. They travel to Pennsylvania to take on No. 20 Bloomsburg on Sunday and face their next conference opponent on Saturday, Jan. 26 when they host Buffalo.

Kent State and Ohio have developed a bit of a rivalry in recent years. Kent State has faced Ohio University more than any other opponent and Flashes’ head coach, Joe Begala, is an Ohio graduate.

Kent State has won the last nine meetings between the universities and leads the series 45-23. The Flashes are 5-3 overall and 2-0 in the Mid-Atlantic conference.
