It is popular belief that Super Bowl Sunday is the second biggest food consumption day of the year – second only to the holy grail of food holidays – Thanksgiving.
For many, the Super Bowl is a religious experience. It is the finale after many months of football - one final game to crown the true champion. No matter what team you root for, the Super Bowl is something to celebrate during the cold, nasty winter months.
I’m a football fan. I enjoy college football because the excitement is contagious and the underdog often prevails. I'm not as big of a fan of professional football since players are making millions and they don’t always seem thrilled to be there.
As the wife of an IT professional, who is a gadget-loving guy, I am also the owner of a gigantic television. And when I say gigantic - I’m not kidding. Our 82” set is as big as a bulletin board and fascinates most first time visitors to our home.
So, who wants to watch the game on a meager 40” or 50” set, when you have the possibility to see the nose hair of every player on the field? Not our friends, that’s for sure.
So on the first Sunday of February every year, you can bet our home is filled with friends ready to watch the game.
Of course, it is also filled with food. And I mean a lot of it. We provide a good base of food and friends bring along a dish to share. There is always a nice collection of wings and pizza, and often some good cheesy-queso-Velveeta-dips that are sure to delight.
Quite frankly, the food is all I care about. Oh, I enjoy the commercials, but I pay so little attention to the game I can’t even tell you who played last year. I’m sure to remember the food and the memories of greasy, fatty goodness.
This year’s Super Bowl menu may include this recipe for Taco Ring. It’s probably not something I would cook for dinner and the opportunity may not arise again for several months. It's time to celebrate what really matters on Super Bowl Sunday - the food!
To make this, you'll need:
2 crescent roll tubes
1 lb. ground beef (or ground turkey)
1 packet of taco seasoning
1 1/2 cups grated cheddar cheese
Lay out the two tubes of crescent pastry, thick sides in. Use some of the left over crescent rolls to make the center a bit thicker.
Brown beef and add taco seasoning.
Lay beef in a circle inside of the laid out crescent rolls.
Add cheese to the top.
Pull over crescent rolls and tuck in under meat and cheese.
Add cheese, lettuce, tomato, black olives, sour cream or whatever you desire for your tacos, in the middle.
Cook according to time on crescent rolls package.
