Taking first place in 15 out of the 16 events, Ohio University swimming dominated in a sprint-heavy meet, downing Xavier 137.5-113.5.

From the first event, the 200-yard medley relay, the Bobcats established that they were the better squad. The team of Addy Ferguson, Tori Bagan, Katey Brooks, and Deidre Geroni took first place convincingly, with a time of 1:28:53.

Stephanie Gyurke also had a strong evening for the home squad, placing second both in the 50 freestyle and the 100 IM. Gyurke, who normally specializes in distance, was excited to get in the pool and swim in shorter events, along with her teammates.

“I feel like some of the pressure was off since we weren’t in our normal events,” Gurke said.

The sophomore also admired her team’s positivity and support on a challenging night for many of her fellow distance swimmers.

Xavier recorded its lone event victory during the 50-yard butterfly, the 13th event of the meet. Freshman Mackenna Rife edged out Deidre Geroni by .34 of a second, recording a 26:20.

While head coach Greg Werner was impressed by his team’s dominant performance, his focus was directed toward the individual performances of his swimmers.

“It was great…we had a lot of season bests and we’re really excited about (their performances,)” Werner said.

In addition to his swimmers, Werner also praised his divers for giving it their all, despite Xavier not sending any divers to Athens.

“It was tough for them, but it was important to work out the jitters and get ready for tomorrow’s meet,” Werner said.
