On this edition of Conversations from Studio B, WOUB’s Director and General Manager Tom Hodson talks with the syndicated “travel guru”, Rudy Maxa.

Maxa is the host of Rudy Maxa’s World – the country’s most widely syndicated radio travel show – and The Savvy Traveler – the Emmy Award winning public television show.

Maxa also hosts a weekly travel show on CBS talk radio in Los Angeles (KFWB) and is a contributing editor with National Geographic Traveler and Delta Air Line’s Sky magazine.

Hodson and Maxa discuss Maxa’s unusual break into journalism, some of the important stories Maxa reported on during his time at The Washington Post and Washingtonian magazine, as well as the joys and challenges of producing travel programming across multiple platforms.

“Everybody wants to talk about travel. I mean, when people stop me in stores, or on the street, or in airports, they’re either about to go somewhere or just went somewhere – it’s really interesting how travel is so aspirational. People think about it, and dream about it, and remember it”, says Maxa.

Rudy Maxa’s World will air on WOUB TV on Mondays at 6 p.m. on the 20.1 and 44.1 channels beginning April 1. And Smart Travel – Europe with Rudy Maxa airs on WOUB TV Monday through Friday at 3:30 p.m. on the 20.2 channel.

Maxa was in Athens to talk with students at the E.W. Scripps School of Journalism and the Scripps College of Communication at Ohio University about producing travel journalism and the field of journalism as a whole.
