State officials are using the 100th anniversary of a devastating flood to encourage Ohioans to prepare for high water emergencies by reviewing their response plans and insurance coverage.

Saturday marks the centennial of the 1913 storms that stalled for days in the Ohio Valley, creating the state's worst weather disaster. It left hundreds of people dead and flooded all of Ohio's rivers and streams and more than 35,000 homes. It washed away or damaged docks, bridges, railroads and trains, wreaking havoc from Cincinnati to Portsmouth to Cleveland.

A group focusing on flood control acknowledges the conditions that led to the flood are rare. But members say it's important to remember similar rainfall could happen again, albeit in an environment with better measures to prevent flooding, protect property and warn residents.
