Beginning in July, Huntington residents will no longer be able to keep couches on their front porches.

A new ordinance prohibits residents from storing upholstered furniture, mattresses and other items that aren't intended for outdoor use on porches or in front yards. Building materials also can't be stored outdoors unless they're for a permitted project on the property.

Media outlets report that City Council approved the ordinance Monday. It goes into effect July 1.

Violators will face fines of up to $500, a 30-day jail sentence, or both.

While driving to City Hall on Monday, Councilman Scott Casera says he counted seven couches and four reclining chairs on porches in an eight-block area.
