Ohio's governor has picked a public utilities regulator to be the state's next director of commerce.

Gov. John Kasich named Andre Porter to the Cabinet position at the Department of Commerce on Thursday. Porter currently serves as a commissioner on the Public Utilities Commission of Ohio. Kasich had appointed him to the regulatory body in 2011.

The commerce department's previous leader, David Goodman, left last month to become the head of the state's Development Services Agency.

Kasich said in a written statement that Porter understands the benefits that consistent regulations bring to the state's economic development efforts.

Porter, of Gahanna, was a practicing attorney before he was appointed to the utilities commission. He starts at the commerce department on April 22.
