The Rio Grande RedStorm women’s volleyball team signed another recruit to the 2013 class. Head coach Billina Donaldson announced the signing of middle/outside hitter Samantha Ousley Thursday evening according to RioRedStorm.com.

Ousley was a standout player at Wellston (Ohio) High School where she earned three straight first team All-Tri-Valley Conference selections and two straight first team All-Southeast District selections. During her time with the Rockets, she recorded 886 kills, 499 digs, 231 aces and 467 points. This past season Ousley led the Rockets to an 8-16 record while notching 301 kills, 182 digs, 86 aces and 159 points, earning the 2012 Nancy Kibler Award, given annually to Wellston’s top student-athlete.

Ousley was an outstanding athlete at Wellston, earning eight varsity letters between volleyball and basketball and six All-TVC Academic Team honors. This past season in basketball Ousley tied a school high for points in a game with 43 points and earned special honorable mention honors for the All-District 13 Coaches Association team.

"Sam is a very strong athlete who will only get better over the next few years," Donaldson said to RioRedStorm.com.

Rio’s campus is just 36 minutes from Ousley’s home in Wellston, Ohio. The close proximity played a role in her decision to play for the RedStorm.

“My family has always been my number one support system,” Ousley told RioRedStorm.com, “so it's good to have them close to me and able to come to my games.”

Ousley’s signing comes days after the signing of four other members to the 2013 class. Ousley’s provides the RedStorm with an excellent middle hitter complementing the two outside hitters and two right side hitters previously signed. Donaldson said that she projects Ousley to get playing time as both a middle and right side hitter.

Ousley’s addition should help the RedStorm compete after 21-10 season and a third-place finish in the Mid-South Conference in 2012.
