The 9th annual Nelsonville Music Festival kicked off with a bang on Thursday, with several local and national acts providing high-energy tunes that kept the audience dancing until the night's end.
As is usually the case with the NMF, there was something for everyone, from the upbeat world rhythms of Gogol Bordello and blistering indie-rock from The Makebelieves to quiet acoustic fare in the No-Fi Cabin from local musicians Chris Biester and JJ Reed.
Speaking of local music, it was well-represented on Thursday, with Hex Net and The D-Rays delivering some of their best performances to date. Judging from the audience's reaction, both bands garnered new fans while keeping longtime devotees happy.
The 2013 Nelsonville Music Festival resumes late Friday morning with solo sets from Leah Nairn and J.D. Hutchison, both from the Athens area. Visit www.nelsonvillefest.org for a complete schedule.
