The State Highway Patrol is investigating the apparent hacking of the Ohio Department of Natural Resources website.

Department spokesman Matt Eiselstein said Friday that the unauthorized changes never jeopardized any personal information for department employees or the public.

He says an unauthorized user made changes embedded in the site's code to redirect visitors or increase Internet traffic at other sites. He says the changes weren't visible to the public and have been corrected.

The investigation began after The Associated Press brought irregularities on the website to the agency's attention.

Eiselstein says Department of Natural Resources technicians are working with the patrol on a criminal investigation.

The department altered access settings to prevent further problems. Other state agencies were urged to be alert for the possibility of similar problems.
